The piecing is about as intricate as the applique in this project file.
My favourite for today is the first one but they ate both interesting designs.

Colour are not wonderfully inspiring, though the florals are nice, but the idea is interesting.
Might have to try all green for the pieced parts of the designs.

I have hidden some toys in amongst the logs for this weeks mid week Log Cabin retreat.
I wonder how many toys are being wrapped up each day at the moment.
Love the design above.
At a Christmas lunch a few days ago the man next to me found a tiny little spinning top in a Christmas cracker. I had to test it out, and it worked beautifully. It just kept spinning, but it was way too small for a small child to be allowed to play with it, but it kept me and the gentleman amused for a few ...

In this project file applique blocks are framed with 3 rows of logs.
The small applique blocks could be replaced with embroidered blocks.
I would like the two designs above a lot more with more variety in the applique, but love the frame around each applique in the one directly above.
Small friendship blocks could be made into a large quilt if they are framed with three or four logs.
hat is all for this weeks Log Cabin Retreat, but there will be more Log Cabin designs mid week, next week
read moreVery interesting, and rather likable!
Another interesting design. This project file has lots of interesting designs waiting for their day on the blog, and I like all of them.
read moreInteresting!
I started this project file to challenge myself to design something outside my comfort zone. I think I moved the comfort zone because I love some of the designs I found by playing with some weird looking blocks along with some pretty colours.
Pretty and interesting.
read moreThe Log Cabin block usually starts with a square, but can also start with a rectangle, a triangle, and a hexagon. Starting with an octagon might be a step too far, but is possible!
Different and very unusual!
The appliques could be done on plain blocks, or pieced blocks using low contrast fabrics for each round.
The one above is my favourite so far …
… but the last one finishes first in the favourite ratings from me!
The gallery is a bit crowded today!
More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.
read moreLots of piecing, followed by lots of applique.
Love the design above.
I haven’t opened this project file for years, and the fabrics are dated, but I learned early on as a quilter that the colours don’t really matter if the contrast works. The contrast in this file isn’t perfect either, but the design is appealing despite that.
Sort of turned the design of the centre inside out and I still love it.
The four extra blocks with applique make it an even better design. I have decided not to spend hours changing the fabric choices in ...
read moreIf we can have flowers mixed with Double Irish Chain blocks, why not with Triple Irish Chains?
Oops! Forgot to turn one flower around, though I could have left them all standing upright! Despite that, I think I like the Triple Chain designs better than the Double Chains, but that could just be the different colours in the chains.
read moreIrish Chain blocks leave space for some quilting or applique, and I started playing a few days ago. It is not the first time I have played, but this time I have also decided I should make full use of the motifs layer in Electric Quilt.
The applique block designs I wanted to use I have changed to Motifs, or applique with no background fabric, and also saved a variety of basic straight settings with all three layers, and plan to add more as it is a great time saver to have them ready to use.
There are two options ...

A very interesting design!
read moreI called this sashing a lot of names while trying to get it to connect nicely during design, most frequently it was “that Twisted Sashing”, though a few other words crept in from time to time!
I like both variations of the sashing, but I think the first one needs more work, while the second one is workable as it is.
read moreYou can start with a small hexagon, and add logs around it, though in some of the hexagons here there is applique added to larger hexagons.
I added some full sized hexagons with no logs, just applique, but most have log borders, sometimes one row, sometimes two.
I love the design above, though to be honest I love all of these.
The design possibilities are endless!
All I need is endless time to collect, sort, cut, etc. fabrics to try out just a tiny fraction of the designs I have shared so far.
I have just discovered that assorted shapes ...

I like the second one of today’s pair.
read moreMiddle of the week, and I suspect the middle of the year is travelling towards us faster than we would like. However, there will be a chance to have a short break mid week, every week, studying Log Cabin quilt designs.
The first two designs this week have exactly the same blocks, but 16 of them have been twisted around a bit.
In number three some extra applique has been added …
… and then the blocks with the extra applique are twisted inside out, …
… and the applique in those blocks was changed during the process.

Now the senior officer is leading his men in a Christmas parade!
I love baby blocks as a quilter, and loved building with baby blocks a long time ago, then watching my children building and knocking them down … now love watching a new generation doing exactly the same thing.
Should have mixed up some balls with the blocks as a tower of blocks is a great target for a rolling ball.
Love an old fashioned collection of toys!

After I selected two designs for today I added three more, and will have another play time after I schedule this post for you, so there is no likelihood of running out of designs to share.
Like the second one too, though I think I would prefer the wide border to be black.
